The Mind: Illusion through Compilation (Awareness)

Scientists are baffled that they cannot locate the mind. That the brain is there but nowhere in the brain does a “mind” actually exists. We know that thoughts happen, but can it be said that they are our thoughts, and how can it be so. They come and they go just as fluid as they had arrived.

Like the couple of readers have come to know that I’ve been reading a series of Osho’s books lately to come back to more of a human being stand point, still knowing what I know (or lack of knowing) and have been digging deep into the book of Awareness when I came across a section of the mind. Here is something that I would like to share with you from this section and the italicized portion are parts in which caught attention.

Thoughts exist- mind doesn’t exist; mind is just the appearance. And when you look into the mind deeper, it disappears. Then there are thoughts. but when the “mind” has disappeared and only individual thoughts exist, many things are immediately solved. The first thing is that immediately you come to know that thoughts are like clouds- they come and go, and you are the sky. When there is no mind, immediately the perception comes that you are no longer involved in the thoughts – thoughts are there, passing through you like clouds passing through the sky, or the wind passing through the trees. Thoughts are passing through you, and they can pass because you are a vast emptiness. There is no hindrance, no obstacle. No wall exists to prevent them; you are not a walled phenomenon. Your sky is the infinitely open; thoughts come and go. And once you start feeling thoughts come and go, and you are the watcher, the witness, the mastery of mind is achieved.
Mind cannot be controlled in the ordinary sense. In the first place, because it is not, how can you control it? In the second place, who will control the mind? Because nobody exists. I mean that NOBODY exists beyond the mind, a nothingness. Who will control the mind? If somebody is controlling the mind, then it will be only a part, a fragment of the mind controlling another fragment of the mind. That is what the ego is. -Osho

He goes on to explain, the only reason why the mind exists is because we have attached ourselves to this compilation of that being who we are. But if that were true then would we not diminish given the thought no longer present..yet we are still here, as whole as we have always been. The mind also is only a compilation of everything already known, and thus from the past. It is memory stored, stagnant, and dead, it no longer may take action, only when one is caught up in it, can it affect the human being. So then what to focus on?

The answer is simple yet complex in its own right, it comes natural to us, one through deep sleep and also through wakefulness, which is Awareness (or being Awake). All the sages and gurus talk of this, and it comes in many forms when trying to explain it in words. It can be seen as Love or Compassion in which Jesus talks about it. When you are aware, you are immediately put into the present, because this moment is the only moment in which you are truly in, in which you are Life itself, you have all that you need here-now.

First you must know what you are not and that you are asleep to begin unraveling how to wake up. You cannot wake up for you do not think you are sleeping, but even while out of dream state, i can assure you we are asleep. You must lose your life to gain your life… Look within yourself, don’t take my word for it. I can only explain what I have experienced, but this doesn’t do it justice, you have to come to know for yourself so look within.
